DIY Turtle Habitat [VIDEOS]

It’a always more fun to make it yourself than just buying a ready-made product. So when I got this little turtle, I set out to make its habitat from scratch.

This is the first one I made:

For this one I used sand, thinking that it will remind the turtle of its habitat, but as you might be able to guess, the sheer maintenance required to keep this one clean was basically impossible.

So this is the current set up:

Instead of using sand, we kept it all water with climbable areas, with a filter installed. We also added heating light. Definitely much less maintenance, and the turtle enjoys sun bathing a lot! She also eats right from our hands 🙂

Snow Removal – Alternate Tools comparison! VIDEO

So, snow days. We all wish we had a nice snow blower, but alas, we don’t always have them (…like never). So we all suck it up and shovel away.

I’ve heard from somewhere that lawn mowers actually work, and leaf blowers aren’t bad either. Since I had newly acquired a leaf blower, and I of course have a lawn mower, so I had to test these theories out.

For those of you who were thinking of trying them out, don’t bother, just watch this short video, and you’ll know how they do… 🙂

Ice Sledding and Ice fishing! Video

This winter’s been really cold. Some lakes and rivers are completely frozen over, and what does that mean??

Ice sledding and Ice fishing of course 🙂

Remember that one week (in NJ area where I live anyway) when it was like unbelievably cold? The ice was really thick, so I decided to “do-it-yourself” an ice sled and take the kids out for a nice round of sledding on the ice lake ^^

Here’s what happened:

Oh and some obligatory warning for ice sledding is included (for obvious reasons) ^^

I searched for good iced-out lakes in the above process, and found out there’s a pretty decent(?) ice fishing scene in the area. So a couple of weeks later, I went in search of that ice fishing scene:

Winter’s not over yet, and I have a feeling there’s more coming!

VIDEO: DIY Shower Faucet Repair

This time I saved some money by fixing by myself our leaky shower faucet. In the video I show you how.

In NJ where we are, the water that comes out of the pipes are so full of minerals that tend to build up easily. It’s definitely better if you can do these repairs by yourself so you’re not calling the repair guys every couple years.

Essentially the repair was to replace the Gerber Shower valve stem.

Got the necessary tools from local Harbor Freight Tools.

If you buy the right tools and install them by yourself, you can seriously save some money as opposed to calling a repair guy 🙂

Making Ramen with Wild Mushrooms

I like going out into the forests to find edible wild mushrooms. It’s well known that you need to really be careful when you pick wild mushrooms, but when you find a good edible one, they’re amazing!

So once I got these “jelly mushrooms,” (btw I show in the video where and how I got them) I had to try putting them into a spicy Korean Ramen. Of course 🙂

Video: I made a target for throwing knives & axes!

I fancied trying out a backyard throwing knife party (don’t worry it didn’t happen) and set out to make a DIY target, using a log and bamboo sticks I earlier got.

It works pretty well, but of course, something funny had to happen somewhere ^^

My daughter and her friend had a great time with it, and seems like her friend got pretty good at it.

Oh and of course, please take caution when handling knives! … and axes ^^

Video: DIY underwater action camera mount

This time I tried making an action camera mount that can take underwater footage while being attached to a fishing line. One of the cool things about these action cameras is that they come with waterproof casings. I just needed to take advantage of that and wanted to see if the camera can actually catch the moment the fish bites!

I had a lot of fun designing this mount, using some cheap dollar store things and everyday objects that can be found around the house.
